Question??????

I'm a little confused on why Pip has given Magwitch the convict another name. Pip is calling Magwitch uncle Provis. I figured that Magwitch was no longer a convict so the reason why he gave him a different name isn't because of the police in fear that they will find him, so why is Pip calling him Provis? Please tell me why they are changing his name so suddenly.
